Orienteering - Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced orienteer, the information below will surely be helpful and useful to you.

What is orienteering?

Orienteering is a sport in which participants must reach designated checkpoints on a previously unknown course as quickly as possible using a map and compass. It combines running with the ability to navigate in terrain.

You can orienteer anywhere – in the city, forest, mountain trails, beaches, and even inside buildings – it all depends on the availability of maps of the area and the creativity of the Course Setter. Most maps are available online, so all you need to do is search for the area you're interested in and add the phrase 'orienteering map', or you can browse ➡️ HERE.

 How to learn orienteering?

Just know where north is! 😊

You can start honing your technical skills at home by analyzing race courses and selecting the best route, i.e., the shortest path between points.

Running training, such as that for road races, focusing on endurance and speed, also helps with orienteering.

Combining everything determines the results in orienteering, but at the beginning, you just need to attend a race or training – the main goal is to have fun.

Where to learn orienteering?

In almost every major city, there is a sports club dedicated to orienteering (you can find a list of available clubs ➡️ HERE under the How to Start section). Simply contact such a club and attend a training session. Many cities also host events promoting orienteering, where the difficulty level varies based on the participant's experience.

Who can orienteer?

Everyone! Orienteering is suitable for all age groups and skill levels. Children, teenagers, adults, and seniors can all enjoy this sport.

During most events, family courses are also available that can be completed on foot, even with small children.
Dog lovers might be interested in courses for participants with dogs, and ultra-running enthusiasts will enjoy adventure races with maps.

It's a sport accessible to everyone! You can start with simpler courses and gradually increase the difficulty level, adjusting to your abilities and goals.

Do you need to know geography to orienteer?

Absolutely not! Orienteering is a discipline that utilizes basic geographical and cartographical knowledge (e.g., determining north in relation to the map).

What to bring to your first orienteering training?

Comfortable shoes and sportswear. In many cases, you don't even need a compass – during events promoting the discipline, organizers provide compasses and chips for electronic time measurement.

Orienteering presents participants with challenges related to terrain navigation, quick map reading, and on-the-fly decision-making. Practicing this discipline allows you to develop orientation skills, logical thinking, route planning, and decision-making abilities.
