Winter Insurance – What to Check?

Going skiing or snowboarding is becoming an increasingly popular way to spend the holiday season or winter break. While snow adventures are a great form of entertainment and activity, they can end catastrophically. According to various data, "during the ski season in the Polish mountains, about 1000 incidents occur, of which nearly 54% are of a serious nature." How can we protect ourselves? Is it worth opting for a policy?
Winter Insurance – What to Check?

The main causes of accidents and health injuries often include: recklessness and insufficient skills of oneself or others on the slope, poor physical condition, undisclosed illnesses, poorly prepared winter equipment, alcohol consumption, and lack of appropriate clothing (such as a helmet).

Why is it worth buying a policy?

One of the fundamental preparations before heading to the mountains for a holiday should be purchasing a policy that:

  • Protects against health-related expenses and rescue operations, such as helicopter assistance, in case of an injury.
  • Ensures compensation if skiing equipment or luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • Transfers financial responsibility to the insurance company if you cause an accident on the slope that injures a third party.

Insurance companies offer winter insurance, but not all policies are the same. They differ in price and coverage extent. Sometimes, the differences may not seem significant, but they can be crucial if something goes wrong.

What should you check when choosing a policy?

  1. Does the protection package include high-risk or extreme sports (skiing and snowboarding are considered extreme or high-risk sports by insurance companies)?
  2. What is the amount of the guaranteed sum?
  3. Does the policy include liability insurance in private life and accident insurance (NNW)?

The cost of purchasing winter insurance is not high, and it is not worth saving on it. Especially if planning winter fun on foreign slopes. The costs of rescue operations and returning to the country using a specialized helicopter or ambulance are really high.
