Many parents wonder when is the right time to send their child on their first independent holiday trip away from home. We will answer this question!

The minimum age for a child to participate in a camp or colony that we've encountered is 5 years, but it depends on the specifics of the program and the planned activities. A child's emotional readiness for such a trip is crucial, so the decision should be well thought out and discussed with your little one.
What Age is Suitable for a First Trip Without Parents?
A good age for a first trip is 7 years – at this age, the child starts primary school, interacts with peers, and often becomes more open to other people. An argument "for" is that for seven-year-olds, you can find an extensive and diverse offer of summer activities, also with themes – such as gymnastics, dance, crafts, survival, and many more.
How to Minimize Stress Related to the First Independent Trip?
- To help your child with the stressful situation caused by new circumstances, it's worth talking to the parents of their school friends – maybe you can send them on the same trip together, and in the company of a friend, it will always be more comforting.
- Another important aspect is gradually preparing the child for an independent trip. Conversations about what the new reality will look like and how the daily routine will change. At this stage, we only talk about the benefits, highlighting positive aspects, and trying to build curiosity and enthusiasm in the child. Avoid expressing your own worries or doubts; don't burden the child with your emotions.
- A good idea is to involve the child in preparations for the trip – making a shopping list, visiting stores together, choosing the necessary clothes and accessories.
- Just before the trip, it is worth agreeing with the child on how often you will be in contact, how you will communicate, and when the first phone call will take place. Such information will give the child a sense of security.
