Green Schools Then and Now

Goals of Green Schools
A green school, or "a trip where students travel with a teacher to relax and learn," has had fundamental goals since the inception of the idea, such as:
- Developing skills for living and cooperating in a group and taking responsibility for one's own safety and that of others;
- Sparking and nurturing various interests in children;
- Fostering independence and resourcefulness;
- Visiting places with natural or health-related attractions;
- Exploring culture, traditions, and folk customs from different parts of Poland;
- Engaging in active recreation;
- Instilling respect for nature.
Organizing Green Schools
Despite the passage of time, the above goals of group trips have not changed. However, other aspects related to green schools have. The development of the tourism industry and the change in client approach have led to changes in the way trips are organized. In the past, organizing a trip was the teacher's responsibility—requiring significant effort, work, and often personal time to arrange accommodation, insurance, transportation, activities, and leisure time management.
Today, trip organization can be entrusted to travel agencies—most agencies offering tourism services include trip organization in their packages. Additionally, they provide an animator whose tasks include handling all contacts and arrangements with the center, setting meal times, and purchasing admission tickets to attractions. Nowadays, schools sometimes organize international trips, enabled by open borders and minimal formalities. Participation in a green school is not mandatory; however, the trip is always organized in a way that every parent can afford the cost.
Green schools remain an attractive form of education. Lessons outside the school walls, in a group of peers, mean not only learning but also adventure, fun, and relaxation.
