Łódź is a city that has permanently etched itself into the history of Polish cinematography. It is here that Polish film was born, and the oldest film school in Europe, the famous "Filmówka," trained generations of filmmakers who gained worldwide fame. This is why in Łódź, in 1976, the Museum of Cinematography was born, the only museum of its kind in Poland.
Museum of Cinematography

The Museum of Cinematography is a place that tells the story of cinema from its very beginnings. It is truly a school of film history and techniques, yet it is also a place full of magic and emotion that attracts both film buffs and those who want to learn the secrets of film art.

The museum's history dates back to the 1970s when it began as the Film and Theater Culture Department at the Museum of the History of the City of Łódź, collecting memorabilia related to cinematography. In 1986, it became an independent branch and moved to the K. Scheibler Palace at Victory Square 1, where it is still located today.

The Museum of Cinematography boasts an impressive collection of over 75,000 exhibits. Here you will find unique archival film equipment, documents from the film world, materials from the production of feature, documentary, animated films, and many others. There are also sections dedicated to the history of cinema in Łódź, its stars, and film productions. The museum also houses an original and fully functional stereoscope that appeared in the film "Vabank."

However, it's not just history that draws people to the Museum of Cinematography. The museum organizes exhibitions, meetings, workshops, and film screenings that allow visitors to learn the secrets of filmmaking. Moreover, the museum has its own film archive and organizes the "Man in Danger" Media Festival, featuring contemporary Polish documentary films on social issues.
